[SMM PV News] Toshiba ESS tests hybrid wind-solar project with storage in Saudi Arabia

Toshiba ESS, in partnership with Japan’s NEDO and Saudi Electricity Co. (SEC), has launched a pilot project near Riyadh to test a hybrid renewable energy system. Running until May 2028, the initiative aims to stabilize power supplies in remote areas where fluctuating renewable output often leads to outages and voltage drops.

Key Project Details:
System Integration: The setup combines an existing wind farm with a new solar plant, an Energy Management System (EMS), and battery storage.
Dual-Battery Strategy: The system uses two specific battery types to ensure reliability:
- Power-oriented: To smooth out immediate supply fluctuations.
- Energy-oriented: To provide high capacity for shifting power peaks.
Goals: The project seeks to prove the economic viability of optimizing battery output while monitoring and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
