[SMM PV News] Rescue bid for German solar glass maker GMB fails.

Published: Dec 1, 2025 09:20
Germany’s Glasmanufaktur Brandenburg GmbH (GMB) , which is Europe’s last solar glass maker will likely shut down permanently after failing to find an investor, its insolvency administrator announced. The insolvent firm, which entered proceedings in July, saw a planned takeover collapse when the potential buyer couldn’t secure financing. Around 215 employees face layoffs starting December 1, with full plant closure expected by March.
Brandenburg’s Economy Minister Daniel Keller lamented the news, criticizing the EU for moving toward dependence on non-European (notably Chinese) solar glass, showing a "disastrous" and "negligent" shift for energy security. The IG BCE union, also disappointed, blamed GMB’s Indian parent company Borosil for shirking responsibility and called for a staff protest in Tschernitz on Monday. Keller noted authorities tried "until the last minute" to support the firm within legal limits.
