Alcoa, Ball Corp, Unilever Team Up for First-Ever ELYSIS Carbon-Free Aluminum Packaging

Published: Nov 14, 2025 00:22
Recently, Alcoa, Ball Corporation, and Unilever announced a collaboration to apply the groundbreaking ELYSIS carbon-free smelting technology for the first time in the production of aluminum packaging for personal care and home care consumer products.

ELYSIS is a technology partnership jointly established by Alcoa and Rio Tinto, with support from Apple, the Canadian government, and the government of Quebec, aimed at driving transformation in the aluminum production industry. Its patented ELYSIS process utilizes inert anode technology, generating oxygen instead of carbon dioxide during smelting, thereby completely eliminating direct greenhouse gas emissions from the smelting process. Currently, the first industrial-scale application of ELYSIS technology is underway, with the goal of advancing the aluminum industry toward decarbonized materials.

This tripartite collaboration marks the first use of aluminum produced with ELYSIS carbon-free smelting technology in packaging for personal care and home care consumer products. The aerosol can, made from 50% ELYSIS primary aluminum and 50% post-consumer recycled aluminum, represents one of the lowest carbon footprint packaging solutions in its category.
