Shanghai (Gasgoo)- On November 12, Tesla announced that the 5 millionth battery pack had rolled off the production line at its Shanghai Gigafactory — marking another significant milestone for the U.S. automaker's largest manufacturing hub outside its home market.

According to Tesla, its battery packs — composed of cells and other structural components — are developed entirely in-house, from chemical formulation to system architecture. The company said these packs are engineered for high performance, superior energy density, and exceptional cold-weather durability. Designed to outlast the vehicles themselves, Tesla's batteries can reportedly sustain more charge cycles than the car's expected service life.

The Shanghai facility's battery packs serve as core components for Tesla's best-selling models, including the Model 3 and Model Y, both of which are produced locally for the Chinese and export markets.

Located in Shanghai's Lin-gang Special Area and covering 860,000 square meters, the Gigafactory is Tesla's first fully owned manufacturing site outside the United States and the first wholly foreign-owned car production facility in China. The plant began operations in late 2019 and has since become a central pillar of Tesla's global supply chain.

The milestone follows a string of achievements at Tesla's Shanghai plant. In July 2024, the company celebrated the production of its 10 millionth electric drive set at the same site — a feat Tesla described as proof of its vertically integrated approach and engineering strength.

By November that same year, the Shanghai Gigafactory had produced its three millionth vehicle and exported its one millionth unit overseas. Annual deliveries exceeded 916,000 vehicles — accounting for roughly half of Tesla's global output in 2024 — underscoring the plant's growing role as a cornerstone of the company's international operations.

According to the latest data from the China Passenger Car Association, Tesla sold 61,497 China-made electric vehicles in October 2025, reaffirming its steady performance in one of the world's most competitive EV markets.
