Japan, US Sign Cooperation Pact on Critical Minerals, Supply Chain Stability
iconOct 30, 2025 15:10
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and US President Donald Trump signed a cooperation framework agreement in Tokyo on the 28th, agreeing to strengthen collaboration in the field of rare earths and other critical minerals, and to ensure supply chain stability through key investment projects. The US has previously reached similar cooperation agreements with Australia, Thailand, and Malaysia.

Under the agreement, the two countries will provide financial support for selected mineral projects within six months, jointly covering the entire industry chain from mining, separation to processing, ultimately producing downstream products such as permanent magnets, batteries, and catalysts, with priority supply to the US and Japanese markets as well as like-minded countries. Support methods include grants, guarantees, loans, equity acquisitions, offtake agreements, and regulatory facilitation.
