Dongfeng Motor said it has established a fully self-controlled solid-state battery supply chain.

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- On October 20, Dongfeng Motor announced via its official WeChat account that the company is steadily advancing its solid-state battery R&D and industrial deployment, achieving a series of notable breakthroughs in the process.

According to the company, Dongfeng Motor has established a fully self-controlled solid-state battery supply chain, mastering key technologies such as electrolytes, separators, and in-situ solidification. The automaker has developed solid-state battery products with energy densities of 240 Wh/kg and 350 Wh/kg, enabling vehicles to achieve ranges exceeding 1,000 kilometers. These batteries not only offer high energy density but also meet the highest safety standards, having passed rigorous tests including the national GB38031-2020 benchmark, as well as puncture, 50% compression deformation, and 150°C thermal chamber evaluations.

Dongfeng Motor began its solid-state battery journey in 2018 by setting up a dedicated project team to research both the cells and system integration technologies. The first-generation solid-state battery system was completed in July 2019, followed by the successful development of a vehicle equipped with this system in June 2020. In January 2022, Dongfeng partnered with a leading power battery manufacturer to co-develop a high-energy-density solid-state battery, which was subsequently installed in the Dongfeng E70 sedan. Today, a pilot fleet of 50 vehicles equipped with these batteries has logged more than 1.5 million kilometers of real-world operation across ten cities in six provinces.

Dongfeng Motor continues to refine and iterate its solid-state technology. At the 2024 World Power Battery Conference, the automaker unveiled its next-generation solid-state battery system alongside several flagship new energy models, showcasing its latest technological progress and strategic vision. The newly developed system features high-energy solid-state cells with a system-level energy density of 285 Wh/kg. Beyond its energy and safety advantages, the system adopts a cell-to-pack (CTP) architecture to maximize space efficiency and reduce overall material costs. An advanced immersion cooling system and wireless battery management system (BMS) further enhance performance and reliability, setting a new benchmark for range and safety in the next generation of electric vehicles.

World's First Mass-Produced Sodium-Ion Battery Passenger Vehicle Officially Unveiled
On February 5, Changan Automobile unveiled its global sodium-ion battery strategy, and the world's first mass-produced sodium-ion battery passenger vehicle was officially introduced. Test data shows that the vehicle equipped with CATL's sodium-ion battery delivers nearly three times the discharge power compared to conventional lithium iron phosphate vehicles with the same battery capacity under -30°C conditions. In extreme cold environments of -40°C, it maintains over 90% capacity retention, and it can still discharge stably even at the extreme low temperature of -50°C.
