BYD is developing a sulfide all-solid-state battery with an energy density of 400 Wh/kg, achieving a driving range exceeding 1,000 km. It is expected to be installed in small batches by 2027 and achieve "solid-liquid parity" by 2030, with deployment in 40,000 vehicles.

Highlights: BYD is developing a sulfide all-solid-state battery with an energy density of 400 Wh/kg, achieving a driving range exceeding 1,000 km. It is expected to be installed in small batches by 2027 and achieve "solid-liquid parity" by 2030, with deployment in 40,000 vehicles.

SMM believes that BYD's announced solid-state battery technology roadmap demonstrates its ambition in the next-generation power battery sector. By combining sulfide electrolytes with high-nickel ternary materials and silicon-based anodes, it not only doubles the energy density but also achieves breakthroughs in safety and fast-charging performance. If its cost control targets are achieved as planned—"a 15-20 times reduction by 2027 and cost parity between solid-state and liquid batteries by 2030"—it will significantly accelerate the commercialization of solid-state batteries and reshape the EV market landscape. However, challenges remain in scaling up from pilot production to mass manufacturing, and whether BYD can deliver on its plan on schedule will be a key focus for the industry.

BYD is actively laying out its presence in the solid-state battery field, having applied for multiple patents covering key technologies such as electrolytes, electrode preparation, and battery packs. These patents reflect BYD's innovation capabilities and market competitiveness in solid-state battery technology. The application and authorization status of the patents indicate the company's emphasis on technological R&D and intellectual property protection, which will help advance the commercialization of solid-state battery technology and enhance its competitiveness in the new energy vehicle market.

According to SMM projections, all-solid-state battery shipments are expected to reach 13.5 GWh by 2028, while semi-solid-state battery shipments are forecast to reach 160 GWh. By 2030, global lithium-ion battery demand is estimated to be around 2,800 GWh, with the compound annual growth rates from 2024 to 2030 for lithium-ion battery demand in EVs, ESS, and consumer electronics at approximately 11%, 27%, and 10%, respectively. The global penetration rate of solid-state batteries is projected to be around 0.1% in 2025, and is expected to reach about 4% for all-solid-state batteries by 2030. By 2035, the global penetration rate of solid-state batteries may approach 10%.
