Late Tuesday night, a fire forced the closure of Novelis' aluminum plant in Scriba, with flames engulfing the roof and damaging the facility's hot rolling mill.
According to the Oswego County 911 dispatcher, the fire began just after 10 p.m. at 448 County Route 1A. Flames and heavy smoke on the roof prompted firefighters to issue a third alarm.
The Scriba plant is the company's first facility in the US and its largest wholly-owned manufacturing plant in North America. It employs approximately 1,200 people and produces over 1 billion pounds of aluminum sheet annually for the automotive, beverage can, and construction industries.
The future of operations remains uncertain, and the company has not yet provided a timetable for the plant's reopening.
