China's power battery installation volume in Aug. 2025 jump 32.4% YoY

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- In August 2025, China recorded power battery installed capacity of 62.5 GWh, up 11.9% from July and 32.4% from a year earlier, according to the China Automotive Power Battery Industry Innovation Alliance ("CAPBIIA").  

Among the, installations of ternary batteries reached 10.9 GWh, accounting for 17.5% of the total, a slight 0.1% dip month-on-month and a 10% year-on-year decline. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, however, dominated with 51.6 GWh, making up 82.5% of the total and rising 14.8% month-on-month and 47.3% year-on-year.

From January to August of 2025, the country's cumulative power battery installations hit 417.9 GWh, surging 43.1% year-on-year. Ternary batteries contributed 77.4 GWh, or 18.5% of the total, representing a 9.7% drop from last year. By contrast, LFP installations surged to 340.5 GWh, accounting for 81.5% of the total and soaring 65.1% year-on-year.

In August, 33 power battery companies in China had batteries installed onto new energy vehicle (NEV) market, two fewer than the same month last year. The top two, top five, and top ten suppliers delivered 39.5 GWh, 50.9 GWh, and 59.4 GWh of batteries, representing 63.1%, 81.5%, and 95.0% of the total, respectively. The top ten's combined share fell 1.1 percentage points compared with a year earlier.

From January to August, 51 power battery makers in China got batteries installed onto NEVs, three more than in the same period last year. The top two, top five, and top ten accounted for 273.4 GWh, 341.9 GWh, and 394.3 GWh of installed capacity, equal to 65.4%, 81.8%, and 94.4% of the total. The combined share of the top ten dropped 1.6 percentage points year on year.

China produced 139.6 GWh of power and other batteries in August, up 4.4% month-on-month and 37.3% year-on-year.

Total battery production in the first eight months reached 970.7 GWh, a spike of 54.3% compared with the same period last year.

Battery sales in August totaled 134.5 GWh, up 5.7% month-on-month and 45.6% year-on-year. Power batteries made up the bulk, with 98.9 GWh sold, accounting for 73.5% of the total and rising 8.5% from July and 44.4% from a year earlier. Sales of other batteries reached 35.6 GWh, or 26.5% of the total, edging down 1.4% from July but climbing 49% year-on-year.

From January to August, total battery sales amounted to 920.7 GWh, shooting up 58.2% year-on-year. Power batteries contributed 675.5 GWh, or 73.4% of total sales, surging 49.7% year-on-year. Other batteries accounted for 245.2 GWh, or 26.6% of the total, nearly doubling with an 87.6% year-on-year hike.

China exported 22.6 GWh of batteries in August, down 2.6% from July but up 23.9% from last year, representing 16.8% of total monthly sales. Power battery exports reached 15.1 GWh, marking 66.6% of the total, rising 1.9% month-on-month and 35.7% year-on-year. Other battery exports stood at 7.6 GWh, one-third of the total, slipping 10.4% from July but still up 5.6% year-on-year.

Over the first eight months of the year, total battery exports reached 173.1 GWh, a 48.5% year-on-year leap, accounting for 18.8% of total year-to-date sales. Power batteries made up 111.5 GWh, or 64.4% of exports, up 30.3% year-on-year. Exports of other batteries reached 61.6 GWh, representing 35.6% of the total and nearly doubling with a 99% surge.
