Kazakh mining giant Eurasian Resources Group (ERG) announced that it has reached a settlement with the Democratic Republic of Congo's state-owned miner Gecamines over a dispute regarding the Swanmines copper and cobalt project. The dispute had led to a suspension of development at some deposits and was submitted to the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) arbitration court in Paris in 2023. The settlement was reached during a visit to Kazakhstan by Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi. According to ERG’s statement, the agreement establishes a framework to advance the Swanmines project and increases Gecamines’ participation. However, ERG did not disclose details on the project's future development or the specifics of Gecamines’ expanded role. Since 2009, ERG has invested more than $9 billion in projects in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
