TISCO Pioneered Stainless Steel Smelting Using Carbon Steel Converter for the First Time

Published: Sep 12, 2025 17:21

Recently, TISCO's steel mill successfully smelted Cr13-series high-carbon martensitic stainless steel using a carbon steel converter for the first time, achieving cross-boundary equipment application. This breakthrough has shattered the traditional belief that "carbon steel production lines cannot produce stainless steel, and stainless steel can only be manufactured on dedicated production lines."

Behind this achievement is the mill's approach of not limiting itself to existing models but examining development with a broader industry perspective. By breaking down traditional barriers, the mill has explored a new development path, with its core always centered on the customer—continuously enhancing its service capabilities in response to changing customer needs.

To achieve this goal, the mill's technical team designed a targeted converter smelting process, precisely controlling molten steel composition to fully meet the requirements of this steel grade. They also optimized the casting process to ensure billet quality met standards, turning what seemed impossible—cross-grade production—into reality. On one hand, process flexibility has been greatly enhanced, enabling "switching production between carbon steel and stainless steel on the same line." Production lines are no longer limited to single steel grade manufacturing, strengthening the steel mill's adaptability to market fluctuations and making it more competitive in a complex and ever-changing market environment. On the other hand, equipment utilization rates have significantly improved. Carbon steel continuous casters have broken free from the constraints of "dedicated machinery for specific uses." By expanding production categories, the mill can quickly initiate production when stainless steel demand increases, reducing equipment idle time, thereby lowering fixed costs per unit product and enhancing economic efficiency.

By integrating and optimizing technical resources, the mill has truly put "customer-centricity" into practice, laying a solid foundation for the technical challenges and practices of cross-grade production. This also profoundly demonstrates the mindset of "viewing TISCO from beyond TISCO." At the same time, this achievement fully embodies the philosophy that "creating value enables sharing value." Through technological innovation, the mill has created tangible value, enhancing its market competitiveness and economic efficiency. Whether through faster response times, more stable product quality, or more competitive pricing, these are concrete implementations of the mill's "customer-centric" approach, transforming technological breakthroughs into customer value.

Before the holiday, the black chain is unlikely to see a trend-driven market [SMM Steel Industry Chain Weekly Report].
This week, ferrous metals were in the doldrums, with coking coal and coke staging a mid-week rise. At the beginning of the week, financial markets experienced sharp fluctuations, dragging down sentiment in the ferrous chain and leading to a pullback in futures. Mid-week, Indonesia's cut to coke production quotas drove coking coal and coke futures to lead the gains, though the impact was more pronounced on thermal coal, while coking coal's rise was largely sentiment-driven and short-lived. In the latter part of the week, finished products continued their seasonal inventory buildup, and support from the raw material side weakened, causing the entire ferrous chain to pull back. In the spot market, with the Chinese New Year holiday approaching, purchasing activity slowed down further, with end-users only making limited, as-needed purchases at low prices.
