【SMM Steel】Turkish steelmakers are calling for urgent action to counter the impact of dumped steel imports, warning that reduced capacity utilization and declining investment are threatening the industry. Cheap and subsidized steel from China and East Asia has created unfair competition in the Turkish market. Rising exports from China, India, and Far Eastern countries have depressed local output, leaving much of Turkey’s 60 million tons of steelmaking capacity underused. Imports from China alone have surged tenfold since 2020, discouraging new investments and undermining sustainable growth. Quality concerns have also been raised, with reports of inconsistent standards and unreliable certifications in imported metal products. From January to July, Turkey’s steel output fell 0.9% year-on-year to around 21.48 million tons, while pig iron production dropped 12.5% to 5.29 million tons.
