The Quebec government has withdrawn from Northvolt AB's electric vehicle battery plant project, ending a high-profile collaboration derailed by the company's bankruptcy. Economy Minister Christine Frechette stated that due to Northvolt's failure to present a viable plan aligned with Quebec's interests, the province will cease funding and seek to recover its investment. The project, estimated to cost over C$5 billion, has already resulted in a C$270 million loss for the government. However, Quebec retains a secured claim of C$260 million tied to the land acquired for the plant.
North American pension funds also suffered losses: the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System recorded a loss on its C$325 million investment, while the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec wrote down its C$150 million investment to zero. The 352 megawatts of power originally allocated to the project will be redirected to other industrial projects in the province. In 2023, the Canadian and Quebec governments had pledged to match subsidies available under the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act, with total potential support exceeding C$5 billion.
