【SMM Steel】The Provincial Government is providing CAD 100,000 from the Innovation and Business Development Fund to support equipment upgrades at Western Steel Works Inc., a West Coast-based custom metal fabrication company. Western Steel Works has operated for over 30 years, serving Newfoundland and Labrador’s commercial, industrial, forestry, fishing, energy, and mining sectors, with facilities in Deer Lake and Corner Brook. The funding will help the company acquire a new arc cutting water table to enable faster and more precise cutting of thicker steel, while reducing waste, gas consumption, and emissions. The company is also investing in 3-D modeling software to reduce reliance on outsourced drafting and engineering. The government contribution leverages CAD 340,000 from other sources and CAD 110,895 in client investment, bringing the project’s total to CAD 550,895. This initiative supports the fund’s mandate to strengthen the province’s energy sector and diversify industrial capacity.
