【SMM Steel】ArcelorMittal South Africa (AMSA) has announced plans to gradually close its long products plants and proceed with layoffs. The business has been struggling with persistent losses due to low-priced imports and weak local demand. Earlier in March, AMSA narrowly avoided closure after securing a 1.68 billion rand loan from the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), which provided a six-month buffer to find solutions. CEO Kobus Verster stated that negotiations with the government and other stakeholders have not progressed smoothly, while internal structural issues remain unsolved. Rising electricity costs and deteriorating transport infrastructure have further constrained development, forcing management to shut down the long products business. AMSA operates two long product plants, and the closures are expected to impact thousands of employees. The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) described the decision as a disaster for the social economy.
