Beijing (Gasgoo)-On September 8, X Square Robot, a Chinese humanoid robot startup, announced that it recently raised nearly 1 billion yuan in a Series A+ funding round. The round was led by Alibaba Cloud and CAS Investment, with additional participation from China Development Bank Capital, HSG and INCE Capital. Existing shareholder Meituan's strategic investment arm increased its stake, while Legend Star and Legend Capital also expanded their commitments.
Significantly, this marks Alibaba Cloud's first investment in a humanoid robot company. The cloud services provider has expressed strong confidence in X Square Robot's technology and will offer broad-based support. The new funds will be directed toward continued training of X Square Robot's fully self-developed general-purpose embodied intelligence foundation model, as well as iterative development of its hardware products.
Founded in late 2023, X Square Robot is among the earliest Chinese companies to achieve end-to-end embodied intelligence large models. It independently developed the "WALL-A" series of VLA (vision-language-action) operation models, establishing a unified cognitive and action framework. The model has demonstrated zero-shot generalization in untrained tasks and pioneered embodied chain-of-thought reasoning, significantly improving the execution of multi-step, long-horizon tasks. By mid-2024, the company had achieved complex manipulation using high-degree-of-freedom dexterous robotic hands.
To foster industry-wide development, X Square Robot has open-sourced its embodied foundation model "Wall-OSS" along with training code, enabling developers to fine-tune the model for practical applications. Trained on large-scale real-world datasets, the model employs a "shared attention + expert routing" architecture, delivering strong generalization, reasoning capabilities, and long-range operational performance.
On the hardware side, X Square Robot unveiled its fully self-developed wheeled dual-arm humanoid robot "Quanta X2" in August. The system, dexterous hands, and exoskeleton teleoperation devices were all designed in-house. Its five-fingered dexterous hand features 20 degrees of freedom and can sense subtle pressure changes, while the integrated arm-hand exoskeleton enables full-body teleoperation. The robot has already been deployed in collaboration with leading clients in both service and industrial sectors across multiple scenarios.
