Vale Base Metals Announces Successful Completion of Cobalt Throughput Test at Voisey's Bay

Published: Sep 5, 2025 04:50
On September 4, 2025, Vale Base Metals announced the successful completion of a cobalt throughput test at its Voisey's Bay mine, located in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. During the 90-day testing period, the mine achieved an average throughput rate of 93.7%, significantly surpassing the 85% threshold required under the streaming agreement with Wheaton Precious Metals and Ecora Resources. Voisey's Bay has been in production since 2005 and completed a multi-year expansion project by the end of 2024, successfully transitioning to an underground mining operation. This transformation has not only extended the life of the mine but also reinforced its role as a key economic driver in Eastern Canada. Looking ahead, the mine will continue to provide a stable supply of low-carbon, high-quality nickel, copper, and cobalt—critical metals for the clean energy industry.

Policy Shocks and High Copper Prices Disrupt Secondary Copper Rod Market in H1 2026
In H1 2026, the secondary copper rod market completely broke away from the traditional "copper price–supply and demand" pricing framework. It was primarily hit by the twin policy shocks of "reverse invoicing" moving from transitional review to full implementation and the clearance of local non-compliant fiscal and tax incentives and subsidies (Document No. 770)
