[SMM New Energy News Flash] Ascend Elements, a U.S.-based lithium-ion battery recycler, announced it has produced over 99% pure recycled lithium carbonate from black mass, marking the first such achievement in U.S. history. The company successfully demonstrated commercial-scale recovery at its Georgia facility and aims to produce more than 15,000 tons annually in the U.S. and Europe by 2027. This milestone supports electrification, critical mineral security, and reduced reliance on imports, as most U.S. and European lithium carbonate currently comes from South America and China. According to Ascend, lithium concentration in black mass is ten times higher than in Chilean brine, and its recovery process generates significantly lower emissions compared to traditional mining, with up to 99% reductions targeted by 2030.
