According to foreign media reports, Maaden has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Emerge to supply renewable energy to its Al Baitha bauxite project. Emerge is a joint venture between Masdar, a global clean energy company, and EDF, a company specializing in innovative low-carbon solutions. Under the agreement, Emerge will develop, build, and operate an 8 MWp solar photovoltaic power plant equipped with a 30 MWh battery energy storage system to ensure an uninterrupted supply of electricity to the bauxite project. Maaden stated that the project is expected to generate approximately 17,300 MWh of electricity annually and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 13,800 tons annually. This facility will enable the mining project to operate almost entirely on renewable energy, a significant step towards more sustainable mining operations. The power purchase agreement for the project is valid for 30 years. Al Baitha is an open-pit mine in Saudi Arabia's Qassim Province with significant annual bauxite production. The mined ore is transported by rail to Ras Al Khair for refining.
