Nippon Steel Corporation, the parent company of US Steel, is advancing its plan to renovate a massive coal-fired furnace in Gary, Indiana.

Nippon Steel has committed to investing approximately $300 million to upgrade Blast Furnace No. 14, the largest of the four operational blast furnaces at the Gary plant on the shores of Lake Michigan. The Japanese steelmaker stated that, as part of its $11 billion capital investment in US Steel by 2028, it will allocate a total of $3.1 billion to the Gary facility.

This investment could extend the furnace's operational life by 20 years, thereby prolonging the company's reliance on coal-based steel production and potentially delaying the broader transition to low-carbon manufacturing methods in the US.
