The Western Australia Environmental Protection Authority (EPA WA) has approved a $4 billion hot briquetted iron (HBI) plant to be built by a South Korean steelmaker on the outskirts of Port Hedland.

The processing facility, planned for Port Hedland, is invested by South Korean steel manufacturer POSCO. It will refine raw iron ore from the Pilbara region and convert it into direct reduced hot briquetted iron (HBI), also known as briquetted steel. The Port Hedland Iron (PHI) project is expected to consume 3-3.5 million mt of iron ore annually and produce 2 million mt of HBI per year.
