【SMM Scrap Aluminium Flash News】EU Evaluating New Tariff on Aluminium Scrap Exports In Response To US Tariff Exemptions on Aluminium Scrap

According to the Financial Times on August 26, 2025, the European Commission is evaluating the imposition of tariffs on all aluminum scrap exports and will make a decision as early as September. Due to the United States imposing a 50% tariff on EU primary aluminum but exempting scrap aluminum, the EU's export of scrap aluminum to the United States almost tripled at the beginning of this year, and the price of scrap aluminum in the United States is about 20% higher than in Europe. The surge in exports has caused material shortages and capacity closures in European recycling plants, threatening approximately 250000 direct jobs and over 1 million related positions. If the new tax is implemented, it can curb the outflow of scrap aluminum and stabilize the supply of raw materials for the green industry chain, but it may also intensify transatlantic trade frictions and weaken the competitiveness of European recyclers in the international market.
