[SMM New Energy News Flash] The European research project HyMetBat brings together 30 partners, led by Germany’s Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), to advance battery technologies beyond lithium-ion and toward more sustainable solutions like sodium-ion. The project focuses on developing innovative measurement and analysis tools to better understand battery materials, enabling precise characterization for sustainable electrode development and optimized recycling. Central to the initiative is the use of advanced X-ray fluorescence analysis, which provides high-resolution, real-time insights into battery chemistry without damaging the cell. By combining this with other analytical techniques, researchers aim to create a comprehensive picture of the chemical, structural, electrical, and thermal properties of battery materials. With €3.5 million in EU funding, the project unites national institutes, universities, and industry partners across Europe, reflecting the strong interest in high-performance, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective batteries that enhance both energy security and technological competitiveness.
