【SMM Steel】US steelmaker Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. commended the US Department of Commerce (USDOC) for expanding Section 232 tariffs to cover derivative steel products, including electrical steel laminations and cores, as well as select stainless steel automotive exhaust components, subject to a 50% duty.
Chairman, President, and CEO Lourenco Goncalves expressed appreciation for the Trump administration’s action to prevent tariff circumvention. The company highlighted that, following its acquisition of AK Steel, it identified evasion attempts involving non-North American melted and poured steel entering via Mexico and Canada—contrary to USMCA intentions.
The USDOC’s inclusion of these derivatives is intended to protect the US market from unfair trade and support continued domestic investment.
