According to foreign media reports, National Aluminium Corporation of India (NALCO) is seeking to increase its alumina and aluminum production through brownfield expansion to obtain Maharatna approval. NALCO Chairman and Managing Director Brijendra Pratap Singh stated at a press conference on Tuesday, "India's aluminum consumption is expected to reach 7-8 million tons per year by 2030, driven by booming infrastructure, power grid, and transportation sectors. The company is well-positioned to meet domestic demand by increasing production." Singh stated that the company will invest INR 171.63 billion to increase the annual capacity of its smelter by 500,000 tons and INR 120.0 billion to increase power generation capacity by 1,080 MW. Land acquisition for the smelter project is in the final stages. Additionally, NALCO is investing INR 56.77 billion to expand its alumina refining capacity through the construction of a fifth stream alumina refinery with an annual capacity of 1 million tons, and INR 19.61 billion to mine bauxite from the Pottangi mine. The company also plans to tap into the huge aluminum consumption potential of the UK. On July 24, the UK and India officially signed the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).
