[SMM Weekly Review] Second-life Application Market Demand Remains Stable This Week (2025.8.18-2025.8.21)

Published: Aug 21, 2025 16:53
From an overall data analysis perspective, the sales momentum of new energy vehicles in early August pulled back. However, as automakers began to stockpile heavily during the September-October peak season, the supply of end-of-life batteries in the market remained stable. Demand from end-use applications was limited. In terms of market transactions, by month-end, trading activities were still sluggish. Some second-life battery producers maintained a low inventory strategy and made just-in-time procurement.

SMM August 21 News:

Second-life application market situation this week:

Overall, the rigid demand for second-life applications remained stable at the end of August, with domestic and overseas markets receiving some support due to the policy transition period. The sales momentum of new energy vehicles gradually faded in early August, while the supply of end-of-life batteries in the market stayed steady. Demand from end-use applications was mediocre, and limited growth is expected going forward. The previous rise in lithium carbonate prices was passed on to battery cells, leading to a slight increase in battery cell prices. Second-life battery cell prices also saw a minor uptick, but overall, the market maintained a balance between supply and demand. Transactions followed the market trend, and it is anticipated that future price increases for second-life battery cells will be limited. Market transactions remained sluggish, with some second-life battery producers continuing to operate with low inventory levels, focusing mainly on essential purchases.

M2i, Volato, and Regenerate Technology Global Partner to Advance Sustainable Battery Recycling in the U.S.
M2i Global, Inc. and Volato Group, Inc., together with Regenerate Technology Global, have formed a strategic partnership announced on April 20, 2026, to develop and deploy advanced battery recycling technology in the United States. The new approach is designed to be much more efficient and environmentally friendly, reducing energy use by more than 80% and cutting greenhouse gas emissions by around 90% compared to conventional smelting processes. It can process different types of batteries, including lithium-ion, lead-acid, and alkaline, and enhances recycled “black mass” to produce high-purity materials suitable for new battery manufacturing more quickly and efficiently.
