SMM Iron Ore Transaction Sentiment Index Officially Released: Insights into Purchase Willingness, Seizing Market Transaction Opportunities

Published: Aug 21, 2025 14:02

The price of iron ore fluctuates sharply due to its inherent financial attributes. However, most key data in the market are released weekly or monthly, making it difficult to match the characteristics of its daily high-frequency fluctuations. The market urgently needs high-frequency quantitative indicators that can promptly reflect trading psychology. To this end, after long-term data accumulation and model construction, the SMM Iron Ore Team has officially launched the "Domestic Mine Transaction Sentiment Index", the "Import Ore Trader Transaction Sentiment Index", the "Steel Mill Transaction Sentiment Index", and the "Iron Ore Transaction Sentiment Composite Index", which are updated at 16:00 every working day, providing quantifiable and explicit sentiment references for industry chain enterprises to assist in decision-making and responding to market changes.

I. Data Highlights

1. Four-dimensional indices, comprehensive portrayal

  • Transaction Sentiment Composite Index: Comprehensively reflects the overall transaction willingness in the market on the day.
  • Upstream Selling Sentiment Index: Quantifies the willingness to sell of domestic mines and import ore traders.
  • Downstream Purchasing Sentiment Index: Quantifies the purchase willingness of steel mills.

2. Professional scoring, weighted by capacity/procurement volume
The analyst team conducts daily targeted exchanges with enterprises, scoring selling/purchasing intentions on a scale of 1–5 (1=few inquiries, individual rigid demand; 5=panic buying, spot cargo sold out immediately), and weights them by enterprise capacity/procurement volume to ensure that the sentiment index represents the industry mainstream.

3. High-frequency release, leading the market
To ensure the timeliness and continuity of the data, the Iron Ore Transaction Sentiment Index is updated at 11:00 every trading day.

II. Application Scenarios

  • Domestic mines/traders: Adjust selling pace based on downstream purchasing sentiment to avoid the risk of low-price dumping.
  • Steel mill enterprises: Identify upstream selling signals to optimize purchasing pace.
  • Financial institutions: Explore the correlation between sentiment and futures prices to assist in investment strategy formulation.

Before the holiday, the black chain is unlikely to see a trend-driven market [SMM Steel Industry Chain Weekly Report].
This week, ferrous metals were in the doldrums, with coking coal and coke staging a mid-week rise. At the beginning of the week, financial markets experienced sharp fluctuations, dragging down sentiment in the ferrous chain and leading to a pullback in futures. Mid-week, Indonesia's cut to coke production quotas drove coking coal and coke futures to lead the gains, though the impact was more pronounced on thermal coal, while coking coal's rise was largely sentiment-driven and short-lived. In the latter part of the week, finished products continued their seasonal inventory buildup, and support from the raw material side weakened, causing the entire ferrous chain to pull back. In the spot market, with the Chinese New Year holiday approaching, purchasing activity slowed down further, with end-users only making limited, as-needed purchases at low prices.
