[SMM New Energy News Flash] Redwood Materials has partnered with Caterpillar to recycle lithium-ion batteries from CAT’s electric mining equipment, notably the R1700 XE underground loader. This machine runs on a 213-kWh battery pack, eliminating diesel emissions, improving underground air quality, and reducing ventilation costs. The collaboration emphasizes a circular value chain, where metals like lithium, cobalt, and nickel extracted through mining are later recovered from the loader’s batteries and reintegrated into the supply chain. When these batteries reach end-of-life, Redwood extracts and refines high-value materials, keeping them in circulation and reducing dependence on newly mined resources. This partnership not only supports the shift from fossil fuels to cleaner energy but also highlights the need for sustainable mining practices. With global battery demand expected to grow over 1,000% in the next decade, Redwood and Caterpillar aim to make mining more sustainable and cost-efficient, ensuring recovered materials benefit both Caterpillar and the broader battery market.
