[AGB2A Project Faces Uneven Restart Prospects Amid Legal Dispute]
In August 2025, Guinea’s Court for the Repression of Economic and Financial Offenses (CRIEF) is set to hear a high-profile case involving former SOGUIPAMI Director General Ahmed Kanté. He is accused of using a network of front companies to unlawfully take control of the AGB2A mining project—recognized by the state as a Project of National Interest—which was launched in 2013 by French businessman Claude Lorcy.
According to the complaint, Kanté allegedly exploited his position in 2021 to seize control of the project without any capital contribution, installing proxies in key entities that ultimately gave him effective control. He also faces accusations of conflicts of interest and violation of mining and anti-corruption laws through dealings involving his wife’s company.
As a result, the AGB2A-SDM branch of the project—having maintained proper operational and tax records—is now preparing for a restart. In contrast, the AGB2A-GIC section, entangled in legal issues, is unlikely to resume operations soon. Its mining zone is expected to be reclaimed by the government, pending further decisions.
