【SMM Steel】China's Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) has formally filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) regarding Canada's restrictive measures on steel imports. The complaint specifically targets Canada's tariff-rate quota system for steel products and additional duties imposed on goods containing Chinese steel components.

According to official procedures, the case will now enter the formal adjudication phase at WTO, with the entire ruling process expected to take 12-18 months. MOFCOM's statement explicitly calls for Canada to revoke these restrictive measures.

Trade data shows that since 2024, Canada has implemented quota management on certain steel products while levying special tariffs on items containing Chinese components. These policies have already had direct impacts on China-Canada steel trade. The WTO will examine whether these measures comply with international trade rules under its standard dispute settlement mechanism.
