[SMM New Energy News Flash] The DOE has announced plans to release notices of funding opportunities totaling nearly $1 billion, more than half of which will be channeled into domestic battery materials recycling. Around $500 million will come from the Battery Materials Processing and Recycling Grant program, and another $500 million will be issued by the Office of Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains to expand U.S. capabilities in processing, recycling, and manufacturing with critical materials. Additionally, up to $135 million will be dedicated to boosting rare earth element (REE) supply chains through projects that demonstrate the commercial viability of recovering REEs from tailings, waste, and byproducts. All grants require at least a 50% cost share, and REE projects must include an academic partner. The initiative, aligned with President Trump’s “Unleashing American Energy” directive, reflects the DOE’s aim to reduce reliance on foreign supply and reinforce national security by reshoring critical mineral processing.
