Shanghai (Gasgoo)- On August 8, CALB, one of China's main lithium battery suppliers, and Guangdong GOVY Technology Co., Ltd. ("GOVY"), the flying car subsidiary of GAC Group, signed an agreement to strengthen their strategic partnership, pledging deeper collaboration in the eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) sector. The two companies aim to jointly advance the standardization of eVTOL power solutions.
GOVY has an existing track record of working with CALB. The battery maker already supplies what it claims is the highest energy density production battery in the industry for GOVY's AirCab model. Launched in June this year, the AirCab—powered by CALB's top-tier aviation-specific battery—attracted over a thousand units of intent pre-orders, with prototype deliveries starting in July.
The battery in question is a high-nickel/silicon chemistry unit tailored for low-altitude mobility, delivering over 300 Wh/kg cell energy density and capable of supporting 6C fast charging. CALB's second-generation semi-solid large cylindrical aviation battery can reach 350 Wh/kg. The GOVY AirCab is now undergoing airworthiness certification, with commercial production and deliveries targeted for late 2026.
According to the companies, the deal reflects GOVY's endorsement of CALB's battery technology and underscores CALB's ambition to expand in the flying vehicle space. Both sides see strong alignment in their low-altitude economy strategies and plan to use specific aircraft programs as platforms for broader cooperation. They will jointly contribute to national and industry airworthiness standards, pool resources, and work toward making urban air mobility safer and more accessible, while supporting the sector's long-term growth.
CALB is not alone in targeting the eVTOL market. CATL announced in April that it would begin mass-producing its first-generation condensed matter battery this year, with applications extending beyond automobiles into aviation. Sunwoda has also launched the mass-produced "Xinyunxiao 1.0" eVTOL-dedicated battery, offering 320 Wh/kg energy density, continuous power density of 3,300 W/kg at room temperature, support for operations from -30°C to 60°C, and a 2,000-cycle lifespan—alongside successful completion of extreme environment airworthiness tests.
