Shanghai (Gasgoo)- On August 7, FAW-Volkswagen's Audi officially put the locally-made Audi A5L sedan onto the Chinese market. Priced between 239,800 yuan and 289,800 yuan, the model debuts with three variants built on the PPC (Premium Platform Combustion) and adopts Audi's latest design language.

Audi announced that the A5L Pilot Edition will be available in October, while the all-domain intelligent hybrid quattro version is scheduled for delivery in December.

Design-wise, the Audi A5L draws heavily from the streamlined aesthetics of the overseas A5 Limousine, featuring sharp character lines and a sleek silhouette. Up front, it sports a large grille with a honeycomb pattern and oversized air intakes on both sides of the bumper. Slim headlamps house a pixel-style LED matrix, capable of displaying different lighting patterns based on selected modes.

The elongated wheelbase and short overhangs give the car a balanced, dynamic profile, with a smooth, arched roofline inspired by the Audi TT that flows naturally into an extended rear deck. Seven exterior color options are offered, including Qingcheng Green and Danxia Brown—two shades developed exclusively for Chinese customers.

A notable safety feature is the partially hidden door handle with dual electronic-mechanical locking. Designed for both aesthetics and security, the system integrates electronic and mechanical functions and includes a two-step manual override—allowing occupants to open the door within three seconds by pulling the handle twice in emergencies where electronics fail.

At the rear, the Audi A5L is equipped with Audi's next-generation OLED taillights—the first internal combustion model to feature the second-gen system. With 364 lighting elements, the OLED unit uses custom-developed algorithms to generate intricate animations multiple times per second without altering overall brightness. This turns the taillight into a de facto external display, offering eight customizable signatures that echo the headlight’s design.

Inside, the cabin features a driver-focused ultra-thin OLED instrument cluster integrated with a sweeping MMI curved display. Every trim level also comes standard with a front passenger display seamlessly embedded into the dashboard, enhancing the digital experience for the co-pilot.

The new "CloudSense" seats are tailored to the ergonomics of Chinese consumers, with 17 key pressure points optimized from the backrest to the thighs. Standard front seats include adjustable leg rests with a 60mm travel range, supported by wide 118mm side bolsters, 76.8mm high-density foam, and an 18mm thick comfort layer.

Audi's next-generation smart cockpit reflects a strong focus on local user demands. A 13.1-inch floating W-HUD (Windshield Head-Up Display) projects real-time navigation overlays directly onto the road view, expanding visual coverage by more than 85% over previous systems. Additionally, a new voice assistant, developed in collaboration with leading domestic partners and featuring a fresh virtual avatar, delivers a smooth and responsive in-car voice experience tailored for Chinese drivers.

The A5L is powered by Huawei's Qiankun ADAS, includes dual front-mounted LiDAR units, six millimeter-wave radars (two asymmetrically placed at the front and four hidden around the vehicle), 13 cameras, and 12 ultrasonic sensors. This multi-layered sensing suite enables advanced driver assistance on both urban and highway routes, and supports smart parking in single-level, multi-story, and open-air environments.

Under the hood, the A5L is powered by the fifth-generation EA888 2.0T engine, delivering 200 kW of power and 400 Nm of torque. A variable turbine geometry (VTG) turbocharger ensures strong performance at high RPMs while maintaining responsiveness at low speeds. For the first time, the A5L also incorporates Audi's HDI dual-motor hybrid system based on a P3 parallel architecture. A transmission-mounted motor provides up to 18 kW of power and recovers up to 25 kW during braking, enabling limited battery-only driving.
