【US automaker temporarily adopts Chinese LFP batteries】Despite high tariffs, General Motors (GM) announced it will temporarily equip its new electric vehicles with Chinese-made lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries until its joint venture with LG Energy Solution achieves mass production in 2027. According to The Wall Street Journal, GM will procure batteries from CATL for the next two years for its Chevrolet Bolt model launching this year. GM stated that "to remain competitive, we need to temporarily source the most cost-effective EV batteries," noting LFP batteries are 35% cheaper than nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) batteries. Although Chinese EV batteries currently face 80% import tariffs, GM believes the arrangement remains profitable even with the additional duties.
