[Rio Tinto Approves $180 Million Norman Creek Project at Amrun bauxite mine]
Rio Tinto will invest US$180 million to open the Norman Creek area of its Amrun bauxite mine on Queensland’s Cape York Peninsula. The work—already under way with a 19 km haul road, camp and telecoms tower—unlocks ore that represents about half of Amrun’s 978 Mt reserves; first production is slated for 2027 and full build-out for 2028.

The company says the move secures Weipa-area jobs “to at least mid-century” and fits into its replacement-capital budget. A parallel feasibility study on the Kangwinan expansion could add up to 20 Mt/yr from 2029, backfilling supply as the Andoom and Gove mines wind down.
