[SMM Lithium News Flash] A new commercial-scale lithium-ion battery recycling facility has been fully commissioned and is now operational in Chester, South Carolina. This facility is the first of its kind in the United States to produce high-purity black mass and battery-grade cathode active materials (CAM) from both nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery chemistries. Using an advanced proprietary process, it achieves a recovery yield exceeding 97%, significantly above industry norms.
The plant, with an initial capacity of 5,000 tons per year, operates under full environmental compliance and strict operational standards. Plans are in place to expand the capacity to 15,000 tons in 2026 and potentially scale up to 50,000 tons per year in response to market demand. Supporting innovation and circular economy goals, related pilot facilities and material testing centers are being developed across the U.S. to strengthen the national closed-loop battery materials recovery and supply network.
