Shanghai (Gasgoo)- On August 1, IM Motors, the premium new energy vehicle (NEV) brand co-backed by SAIC Motor, Zhangjiang High-tech, and Alibaba Group, officially launched its new super range-extended technology "Hengxing" (literally named "star"), marking its entry into the growing range-extended electric vehicle (REEV) segment.
Two upcoming models will debut with the new technology: the REEV version of the all-new IM LS6, scheduled for a global premiere on August 15, and the IM LS9 flagship SUV, set to be launched in the fourth quarter of this year.
According to IM Motors, the Hengxing technology represents a major technological integration from its parent company SAIC Motor, delivering a new category of NEVs capable of over 1,500 kilometers of combined range and more than 450 kilometers on battery power alone—essentially, "an EV with a built-in supercharger."
The Hengxing system introduces four key innovations aimed at redefining the REEV experience.
First, IM Motors co-developed with CATL the 66 kWh, 800V high-voltage battery pack dedicated to REEVs—the Super Freevoy MAX battery. It offers a battery-powered range of up to 450 km under CLTC testing cycle, enough to cover a week's worth of city driving. The 800V architecture supports ultra-fast charging at a peak power of 268 kW, enabling a 310 km range top-up in just 15 minutes.
Second, the new technology introduces the Zephyr 1.5T engine—an ultra-efficient dedicated range extender developed in-house by SAIC Motor. It delivers a fuel consumption of just 5.32 liters per 100 km when operating without battery power. Compatible with 92-octane fuel, the engine helps extend total driving range to over 1,500 km while keeping running costs low.
Third, the automaker has developed a pioneering ERNC active noise reduction system that delivers deep NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) optimization throughout the vehicle. This technology reduces idle cabin noise to under 36 dB and limits engine start-up sound fluctuation to just 0.01 dB, creating a notably quieter ride.
Fourth, the Hengxing technology features an 800V silicon carbide "Hurricane" electric motor paired with the Super Freevoy MAX battery. Even at just 16% battery capacity, the motor still delivers up to 275.5 kW of output, ensuring the system can continue to deliver full axle power with minimal compromise on performance.
Battery safety is another core pillar of the Hengxing system. According to the IM Motors, the platform's dedicated battery pack is engineered to meet aerospace-grade safety standards, featuring seven layers of protection—ranging from 24/7 thermal monitoring and emergency cooling to directional pressure relief, flame retardants, and high-temperature insulation.
