European Aluminium is pressing the European Commission to remedy what it calls “distorted” market conditions caused by the new EU-US trade agreement. The pact imposes a 15 % US import duty on aluminium scrap, making it simpler to ship scrap across the Atlantic than primary metal or semi-fabricated products. The association warns that this imbalance will hurt European recyclers by encouraging scrap to leave the continent and creating a “harmful arbitrage.”
While European Aluminium welcomed President Ursula von der Leyen’s acknowledgement of the problem—through references to lower tariffs and a quota system—it stressed that the timing and details remain unclear. The group has given the Commission eight weeks to act and expects, by September, a definitive decision supporting an erga omnes export measure on aluminium scrap.
