[Proposed U.S. Aluminum Smelters Face Power Challenges Amid Surging Demand]

Emirates Global Aluminium plans to build a $4 billion aluminium smelter at Oklahoma’s Port of Inola, aiming to produce 600,000 tons annually. Canary Media labelled it an “energy hog” due to its immense electricity needs. The project recently prompted Oklahoma regulators to approve PSO’s $730 million purchase of a nearby power plant to secure supply. A similar plant is also proposed in Kentucky, but both face challenges amid rising competition for power from AI data centres and strained U.S. grid capacity.
