Iberdrola and Echelon Data Centres have formed a joint venture to develop data centers in Spain. The partnership will see Echelon hold 80% ownership and Iberdrola 20% through subsidiary CPD4Green.
Their first project, Madrid Sur, will occupy 160,000 sqm with 144MW processing capacity. The facility has secured 230MW power connectivity and is scheduled for operation before 2030. Annual energy consumption is estimated at 1TWh, primarily supplied by an on-site solar plant with additional clean energy from Iberdrola.
Iberdrola will provide grid-connected land and ensure 24/7 power supply. Echelon, owned by Starwood Capital, will handle development, permitting, and operations. The project is expected to create approximately 1,500 jobs.
Iberdrola’s corporate development director stated the partnership supports data center development as an electricity demand driver. Echelon’s investment director cited Spain’s renewable energy access and construction capabilities as strategic factors.
