The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) announced that it would provide AUD 44.9 million in funding to Calix for the construction of a demonstration plant utilizing Zero Emission Steel Technology (ZESTY). The plant will utilize renewable energy and hydrogen, and is expected to produce 30,000 mt of low-carbon hydrogen direct reduced iron (HDRI) and hot briquetted iron (HBI) annually. Darren Miller, CEO of ARENA, stated that this technology could significantly reduce the hydrogen demand in the ironmaking process. By leveraging Australia's abundant solar and wind energy resources, it has the potential to establish a new green steel industry targeting domestic and overseas markets.
