[Japan unveils outline of US tariff agreement, will review subsidies for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles] Japan unveiled a document on Friday describing its understanding of the tariff agreement reached with the Trump administration, which includes policy changes to open its market to US cars, but lacks the exact figures claimed by Washington. As part of the agreement, Japan will review a purchase subsidy that favors (hydrogen) fuel cell vehicles over battery-powered electric vehicles (EVs). Japan will also accept US passenger cars that meet safety standards without additional testing. A report from the US Trade Representative's Office this year noted that fuel cell vehicles "receive significantly higher subsidies" than battery-powered EVs and called for changes. The US believes that these modifications will increase sales of US-made EVs in Japan, such as Tesla.
