SMM has learned that Shenergy Co., Ltd., a leading Chinese energy enterprise, has entered into a strategic cooperation agreement with Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corporation. As one of the most widely adopted new energy storage technologies, battery energy storage serves as a critical component in building next-generation power systems. Shenergy has established operational cases and mature expertise across diverse energy storage applications, including generation-side, grid-side, and user-side storage solutions.
This collaboration will focus on exploring the second-life applications of Toyota's automotive nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries in energy storage systems, particularly for grid frequency regulation. The initiative represents a significant step by both parties to implement green development strategies and deepen international cooperation, combining their respective strengths to foster an open, sustainable energy ecosystem.
Toyota brings nearly three decades of expertise in NiMH battery technology through its hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). The company anticipates that this partnership with Shenergy will leverage its technical know-how in NiMH batteries and energy storage systems to advance the deployment of repurposed automotive batteries in power grid applications.
