South Korea's leading battery manufacturer has announced a joint venture with Japan automative company, the trading arm of the Japanese automotive giant, to launch a battery recycling business in the United States. The partnership will establish a pre-processing facility in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, specializing in the extraction of black mass—a key intermediate product containing valuable metals such as nickel, cobalt, and lithium. Scheduled to commence operations in 2026, the facility is expected to process 13,500 tons of battery scrap annually. Initially, LG Energy Solution will supply scrap materials generated from Toyota’s battery production processes. The extracted black mass will undergo further refining to recover critical raw materials. The JV also plans to establish a "battery-to-battery" closed-loop system, enabling recycled materials to re-enter the production of new batteries and promoting a circular economy within the supply chain. LG Energy Solution emphasized its collaboration with advanced recycling technology partners to build a competitive, localized recycling infrastructure
