The US Department of the Interior announced new measures to streamline the approval process for recovering critical minerals such as rare earths, lithium, and cobalt from tailings, coal gangue, and abandoned uranium mines. The order requires updating the criteria for federal funding support, accelerating the assessment of uranium recovery from abandoned mines, and mapping waste materials in federal mining areas. This is another action by the Trump administration to promote the localization of critical mineral production, following its invocation of the Defense Production Act in March.
