UK aluminum smelter Alvance British Aluminium has reached an agreement to provide new railway wagons for its plant. It has signed a 10-year lease agreement with VTG Rail UK to supply 20 four-axle powder tank wagons. These wagons will transport bauxite from Blyth Port in Northumberland, UK, to the Fort William smelter in Lochaber, Scotland. These wagons will replace the two-axle car models used since the late 1980s, nearly doubling the cargo capacity per trip. This upgrade will reduce the annual number of railway transports from 107 to 76, a 30% decrease, thereby improving efficiency and environmental performance. This transition aims to maintain an uninterrupted supply of bauxite for its 24/7 smelting operations.
