Anglo American's iron ore production in Q2 was up 2% YoY, with the semi-annual target achieved

On July 24, Anglo American (hereinafter referred to as Anglo American) released its production and sales report for Q2 2025.

Production:The report indicates that Anglo American's iron ore production in Q2 2025 was 15.94 million mt, up 3% MoM and 2% YoY. Iron ore production in H1 2025 was 31.38 million mt, up 2% YoY.

Sales:Iron ore sales in Q2 were 16.41 million mt, up 13% MoM and down 1% YoY. Iron ore sales in H1 2025 were 30.97 million mt, up 5% YoY.

The company's annual production target for 2025 remains unchanged at a total production of 57-61 million mt, including 35-37 million mt from the Kumba mine area and 22-24 million mt from the Minas-Rio mine area. Based on the lower limit of the annual production guidance target, the company's overall iron ore production progress in H1 reached 55%.

The company's annual unit cash cost target for 2025 remains unchanged at $36/mt, including approximately $39/mt from Kumba and $32/mt from Minas-Rio.

By mine area:

Kumba mine area in South Africa:

Production:In Q2, the Kumba mine area produced 9.257 million mt of iron ore, up 3% MoM and 1% YoY. Among them, the Sishen mine in this area saw a 3% YoY decrease in production due to mine maintenance, but the Kolomela mine's production increased by 11% YoY, offsetting the shortfall.

Sales:In Q2, the Kumba mine area sold 9.77 million mt of iron ore, up 9% MoM and 1% YoY. Among them,sales were 6.463 million mt, up 7% MoM and 8% YoY;sales were 3.307 million mt, up 14% MoM and down 11% YoY. The average iron grade of quarterly sales was 62%.

Minas-Rio mine area in Brazil:

Production:In Q2, the Minas-Rio mine area produced 6.679 million mt of pellet feed, up 3% MoM and 4% YoY, mainly due to improved recovery rates at the mine's beneficiation plant and enhanced operational stability.

Sales:In Q2, the Minas-Rio mine area sold 6.636 million mt of pellet feed, up 18% MoM and down 2% YoY, mainly due to delays in some shipments. The average iron grade of quarterly sales was approximately 67%.

This week, ferrous metals were in the doldrums, with coking coal and coke staging a mid-week rise. At the beginning of the week, financial markets experienced sharp fluctuations, dragging down sentiment in the ferrous chain and leading to a pullback in futures. Mid-week, Indonesia's cut to coke production quotas drove coking coal and coke futures to lead the gains, though the impact was more pronounced on thermal coal, while coking coal's rise was largely sentiment-driven and short-lived. In the latter part of the week, finished products continued their seasonal inventory buildup, and support from the raw material side weakened, causing the entire ferrous chain to pull back. In the spot market, with the Chinese New Year holiday approaching, purchasing activity slowed down further, with end-users only making limited, as-needed purchases at low prices.
