On July 24th, Teck Resources announced board approval to proceed with the Highland Valley Copper Mine Life Extension Project (HVC MLE), a major investment aimed at extending the life of Canada’s largest copper mine through 2046. The project supports Teck’s strategy to double copper production by the end of the decade and aligns with increasing global demand for copper as a key energy transition metal.

Teck CEO Jonathan Price stated that the extension will deliver a strong internal rate of return and ensure long-term access to critical minerals. The project is expected to maintain approximately 1,500 direct jobs and $500 million in annual GDP from current operations, while generating around 2,900 additional jobs and $435 million in GDP during construction.

Teck emphasized that all major permits are in place, engineering work is nearly 70% complete, and procurement and contracting are well advanced. The company will continue working closely with Indigenous governments and local communities to ensure responsible development of the site.
