Vale's iron ore production in Q2 2025 was up 4% YoY

On July 22, 2025, Vale (BHP) released its production and sales report for Q2 2025.
In terms of production: In Q2 2025, Vale's total iron ore production was 83.6 million mt, up 3 million mt YoY, representing a 4% increase. The main drivers were the strong performance of the Brucutu operation area, which achieved robust results with the commissioning of the fourth beneficiation line for trial operation, and the S11D mine, which set a new production record for Q2. Total pellet production was 7.9 million mt, down 1 million mt YoY, representing a 12% decrease, which was in line with the revised production guidance for 2025.
In terms of sales: Vale's total iron ore sales in Q2 were 77.3 million mt, down 2.4 million mt YoY, representing a 3% decrease, due to the company's implementation of a product portfolio optimization strategy that prioritized the supply of medium-grade products.

Vale's iron ore production for 2025 is expected to range between 325 million mt and 335 million mt

This week, ferrous metals were in the doldrums, with coking coal and coke staging a mid-week rise. At the beginning of the week, financial markets experienced sharp fluctuations, dragging down sentiment in the ferrous chain and leading to a pullback in futures. Mid-week, Indonesia's cut to coke production quotas drove coking coal and coke futures to lead the gains, though the impact was more pronounced on thermal coal, while coking coal's rise was largely sentiment-driven and short-lived. In the latter part of the week, finished products continued their seasonal inventory buildup, and support from the raw material side weakened, causing the entire ferrous chain to pull back. In the spot market, with the Chinese New Year holiday approaching, purchasing activity slowed down further, with end-users only making limited, as-needed purchases at low prices.
