EU Introduces New E-Waste Tax to Upgrade Resource Recycling System
To more comprehensively promote resource recycling, the EU has proposed a plan to tax unrecycled waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) in addition to plastic packaging waste. This new tax sets a rate of 2 euros per kg, which will be adjusted annually according to inflation, and is expected to bring the EU up to 15 billion euros in additional fiscal revenue each year.
The EU hopes that this tax will encourage member states to more actively improve their e-waste recycling systems, thereby promoting the recycling of key raw materials and enhancing the EU's autonomy in resource strategy. Meanwhile, the EU also advocates that member states flexibly formulate implementation measures tailored to their own national conditions in accordance with the "principle of subsidiarity.
